Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Boston Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski will be honored with a statue at Fenway Park.

Yastrzemski played his entire 23-year Hall of Fame career with the Red Sox. The unveiling of the statue will take place prior to Boston's game against Toronto on Sunday, Sept. 22 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his retirement.

"This is quite an honor," said the 74-year-old Yastrzemski in a statement Wednesday. "To have a bronze statue at Fenway Park is something I never could have imagined, and I am very grateful to the Red Sox for this kind gesture."

Yastrzemski played left field and first base for the Red Sox from 1961 through 1983. He hit 452 home runs, drove in 1,844 runs and batted .285 while playing 3,308 games for Boston.

The 18-time All-Star won batting's Triple Crown and was named AL MVP in 1967 while leading the "Impossible Dream" Red Sox to a surprising American League pennant. He also helped Boston to the 1975 World Series.

Yastrzemski, always known as "Yaz," was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989.

The statue will be the third at Fenway Park. It will stand between the Ted Williams statue and the "Teammates" statue that depicts Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky and Bobby Doerr.
