VATICAN CITY - The eyes of the world's Catholics were on the Vatican Sunday as Pope Francis rode through Saint Peter's Square in an open-top vehicle. More than 250,000 people gathered to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass, the first for the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

Pope Francis was elected on March 13th. After the mass, the pope waved as he rode through Saint Peter's Square, and stopped to bless a number of children including a disabled child.

Here in the United States the first family attended Easter services at a church near the White House Sunday. President Obama, First Lady Michelle and their daughters Sasha and Malia made the short walk across Lafayette Park to St. John's Episcopal Church.

The Obamas have previously worshipped at the church, where a pew nine rows back from the altar is designated as "The President's Pew."

Here in San Antonio, where 30% of the population is estimated to be Catholic, Easter masses were conducted throughout the day at San Fernando Cathedral.

Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller officiated the services in English and Spanish. The events wrap up a holy week that brings thousands of visitors to San Antonio from Mexico and elsewhere.
