Remembering Live Wrestling
Harry Thornton
Submitted by Scott Fraley (not verified) on March 14, 2009 - 10:55pm.
I remember as a child crawling up on my daddies' lap to watch wrestling on Saturday afternoons. I use to love Mr. Wrestling II. I still look up everything I can about him. He was like a superhero to me. I mean, he wore a mask and fought the bad guys. That's a superhero, right?
Later, when I started going to school, i would have to be at my grandmother's house @ 6 a.m. There, every morning , we watched the morning show with Harry Thornton.
That man was such an important part of my childhood, and the reason I love wrestling today. His shows brought my family together in a way nothing else on t.v. has since. It was something we could share, old and young alike.
It still breaks my heart to know that he only got to enjoy a few months of his retirement before he died. I guess its amazing what you recollect from your childhood.
R.I.P. Harry Thornton

Harry Thorton and wrestling

I grew up going to the channel 12 studio and the Memorial auditorium to watch the wrestling matches. I loved it. We never missed watching it on t.v.. It was some of the happiest times of my life. I would get the autographs of Jackie Fargo, Tojo, Lynn Rossi, Don Carson, Bearcat Brown, Jerry Jarrett, Saul Wyndroff, I could go on and on. I also watched Harry Thorton on his morning show faithfully. I miss those days. The hotdogs at the auditorium were the best. Wrestling today can not begin to compare with those days gone by.

our family went to the matches at the auditorium and studio at the tv station too. My Mom and Sister had Don and Al Green fan club. It was something for a small town school boy to go to Chattanooga every week. maybe twice a week. We also went to matches at the national guard armory in Cleveland tenn. on friday nights. My mom's name was Hansel Hughes, and sister's name was Sandra Hughes, My name is Rocky Hughes, I still live in Murphy and my Email address is rockyhughes64@yahoo.com.

my grandfather took my father when he was a boy all the way to chattanooga to the tv station he would say to see aundrea the giant. he loved telling the family that story. I barely remember Mr. Wrestling # 1 &2 but I am a Goldberg and Legion of Doom Fan they changed Wrestling forever. It would be nice to see one of the local stations maybe 12 hint hint to bring back wrestling on the weekends.

geeeeeeeeezus.......so many memories popping up....going to the tv station on mccallie avenue for those wrestling matches...going to memorial auditorium on thursday to watch wrestling..there was always a huge crowd that all sat together....tojo, irish mike clancy, the blonde guys that were brothers, LOL....can see their faces, but the names elude me...grew up with this kind of wrestling, guess is why the "displays" they call wrestling today are so boring!

Harry and Tojo
Submitted by Collins Parker on February 11, 2008 - 10:55am.
Harry Thornton got out of the wrestling game in the early 80's and did his last Morning Show in the summer of 1982. But he didn't get much time to enjoy his retirement. Harry died of a blood clot just a few months later. Just last week, his widow died. Mrs. T made it to 92 years old. The end came abruptly for Tojo, also. He had to retire from wrestling in 1991 because of diabetes. And within a year, he had shot himself. He died at the age of 65. Check out this Tojo tribute by a TV station in Nashville.
The wrestling video comes from right here at TV 12... you can hear Harry's voice doing the announcing.

Tojo and Bear Cat Brown with Daddy
Submitted by Barbara Fulghum (not verified) on January 7, 2009 - 2:43pm.
Thank you so much for this walk down memory lane I will never forget my terror as a little girl of sitting with Mama, Daddy, Nannie, Papa, my sister and brother at the Drake restaurant, after going to see wrestling at the Memorial Auditorium with Tojo and Bear Cat Brown as opponents, only to have them walk in together, at the Drake and my daddy standing up and inviting them to join us. I did'nt know they knew daddy or that they were all friends but they laughed the evening away with our family. They were the nicest men I had ever met besides daddy and papa. I will never forget how the three of them turned my terror to laughter as I watched them!
