Erlanger Closes Burn Center, Chattanooga Fire Fighters Object

Burn ICU Closure

The bottom line is that Erlanger facility never wanted to deligate the funds for the Burn intensive care unit even though it was one of the few ICU's that generated a substancial amount of revenue for the hospital. If they want to make a ton of money then they need to let Memorial Hospital become the Level one Trauma Center that is County Funded! The money is there and there are doctors that are interested in coming to Erlanger as a Burn doctor. Until one of their love ones (God forbid I hope they never have to experience it) suffers this type of Trauma it will not be of importance to them.

Closing the Burn Unit

For Erlanger officials to publically state that closing the unit is "in the best interests of our patients" is absurd. Do they expect the public to believe this? How does closing a unit that serves a 100 mile radius help patients?

Erlanger has an obligation

Erlanger has an obligation to this community to provide these services. The fire fighters, electricians, and numerous others who place their selves at risk everyday to serve the comminity deserve to have a burn center in this area. Burn patients have a narrow window to receive care. The clock for these patients begins ticking at the time of the injury. They often require long hospitalizations and not only need expedient transfer to a burn center for specialized care but need the support of their family and friends. Something that will not be possible when they are transfered to other facilities.
