FTC accuses Volkswagen of deceptive advertising “clean diesels”
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The FTC accuses Volkswagen Group of America with deceptive advertising.
The Federal Trade Commission has filed a complaint in federal court against the automaker.
It accuses VW of advertising “clean diesel” vehicles that would later prove to be not so clean.
The FTC issued a statement today says Volkswagen “deceived consumers by selling or leasing more than 550,000 diesel cars based on false claims that the cars were low-emission, environmentally friendly, met emissions standards and would maintain a high resale value” for seven years.
They accuse the company of promoting clean cars in a high-profile ad campaign that included Super Bowl ads, online media campaigns and print advertising.
The agency wants a court to order VW to pay consumers who bought or leased the vehicles between late 2008 to late 2015.
Volkswagen responded in a statement of their own saying the company “has received the complaint and continues to cooperate with all relevant U.S. regulators, including the Federal Trade Commission. Our most important priority is to find a solution to the diesel emissions matter and earn back the trust of our customers and dealers as we build a better company.”
