12-year-old girl dies after getting stuck in pipe near dam

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (AP) – A 12-year-old girl who was swimming and got sucked into a drainage pipe near a dam in Alabama has died.

Muscle Shoals police say it took crews less than an hour Wednesday to get the girl out of the pipe near the Wilson Dam, but they did have to use the jaws of life.

The dam spans the Tennessee River between Lauderdale and Colbert counties.

Responders tell WAFF-TV the child was recovered but later died. Her name has not been released.

Colbert County Emergency Management director Mike Melton says it’s the first time they’ve had to respond to such a call. Tennessee Valley Authority and Sheffield police will investigate.
