NPS Commemorates Siege of Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The National Park Service is giving Chattanoogans and visitors a living history lesson.

This weekend, NPS held events commemorating the 153rd anniversary of the Siege of Chattanooga.

That’s when Civil War Union soldiers hunkered down in the Scenic City, concerned over starvation.

At Renaissance Park, folks portrayed a Union soldier and his sweetheart, telling the story of the mourning women went through when a soldier didn’t make it home alive.

“Having people that are in costume, that are dressed up in uniforms and clothing of that period is more enticing sometimes than just someone in a ranger uniform out here. It’s easier, more approachable,” said Christopher Young, Interpretive Park Ranger.

The National Park Service hosts history programs throughout the year.
