64 year old letter reunited with family of man who wrote it

DALTON, Ga. (WDEF)- This story has come full circle right here on News 12.

Early this week, we told you about a 64 year old Love Letter that was found on the floor of a Dalton Neighborhood Walmart.

The grandson of the couple at the center of this story…. says it was our post saying “Do you Know Max and Martha?” that gave him chills.

Because his answer was “Yes, I know them very well.”

Jennifer Hendrix says, “I knew I had to find his family.”

In just just two days, this letter is now in the hands of the Holcomb Family.

Jason Holcomb says, “I looked at one of her first posts and I saw the article that News 12 have been running and it said Max and Martha… it blew my mind”

It’s about a love story that began a short time before the letter was written and 64 years before it was found on the floor of this Dalton Neighborhood Walmart.

Holcomb says, “I believe God wanted for us to have it” and his wife agreed, “I feel like we got a piece of them back.”

How this letter was found on the floor of this Dalton Neighborhood Walmart remains a mystery, but his grandson Jason Holcomb says they are glad to have the letter now.

It was written by the military man Max Holcomb to his honey… Martha Young just days before their August 1954 wedding.

He was asking for her permission to ask her parents for her hand in marriage.

He, of course, got that permission… and in August of 1954 they were married.

Max died just last year. He lost the love of his life in 2014 after 60 years of marriage.

Jason says… they were inseparable… until their final days.

“The last day that he was on this earth he asked… He had just as much love for her then as he did in this letter and he said he missed Martha just like he did in this letter and he wished that she was here with him,” says Jason.

Jason also named his son after Max and says he hopes to share this story with him when he gets older, but it’s definitely something his family will be talking about for a while.
