National Night Out highlights police and community relationships, safe neighborhoods, and Corgis

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – In fun fashion, many Corgis made their way in to the St. Elmo neighborhood for a Corgi contest and parade.

The pup parade has been going on for several years in Chattanooga.

On Tuesday, it was a part of the National Night Out event in the neighborhood.

“It’s an opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other and that’s where safety really starts,” Chattanooga Councilman Erskine Oglesby said.

National Night Out festivities took place in 13 areas of the city.

The events are a way to help create good relationships between officers and residents.

“When you get to know everybody and you’re working together, one man can’t stop anything and the police department by itself we can’t do a lot, but if we get the community support and the community helping us and we all work together, we can stop just about anything we need to,” Chattanooga Police Sgt. Wayne Jefferson said.

The events also highlight safe neighborhoods.

“The biggest thing that we want is to promote neighborhood watch and all that is, is we need to be nosy again and pay attention to what’s going on in our neighborhoods,” Sgt. Jefferson said.

National Night Out is celebrated every year and parallel with National Night Out events happening across the U.S.
