Dalton’s Sidney Wheeler Boxes Nation’s Top Amateur in Semis of USA Team Trials

Chattanooga-(WDEF) Dalton native Sidney Wheeler boxed in the semifinals of the USA team trials on Thursday night at the Chattanooga Trade and Convention Center.
He took on Steven Nelson, and talk about a tough match.
Wheeler is just 18-years-old. He graduated from Dalton High School last spring.
Nelson is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, and he’s the top ranked light heavyweight boxer in the U.S.
Wheeler landed some good punches early on.
But in the third round, Nelson hit Wheeler, forcing the ref to step in for a standing eight count.
Match went the full three rounds with Nelson claiming the victory.
But Wheeler wasn’t disappointed in his effort.
"That was my 13th fight I just had. And I think he’s ranked number one in the nation. I went all three rounds with him. I’m proud of that."
  Wheeler will box for the bronze medal on Friday night.
