Signal Mountain’s Drew Lowry Giving Eagles a Spark After Moving to Quarterback
Signal Mountain, TN-(WDEF-TV) Signal Mountain is riding a five game winning streak into their regular season finale Friday night against Sweetwater.
After struggling a bit to start the season, the Eagles started to soar when receiver Drew Lowry was inserted at quarterback.
Drew Lowry was content at receiver. Heck he had 100 yards receiving in the Tyner game. But with the Eagles win-less and trailing Red Bank in their fourth game, head coach Josh Roberts moved Lowry to quarterback after halftime.
Said Lowry:”Coach Roberts just told me he was going to put me in there and try to have me make a play. I love having the ball in my hands. The offensive line did a good job of making holes, and I just hit’em and broke some tackles, and then we just kept rolling from there.”
Lowry showed tremendous senior poise in his first start the following week against Loudon.
Said Roberts:”Actually at Loudon we played a terrible first half, and we were 0-4 at that point. We were looking 0-5 in the face. We were down 7-6. Some of the guys were kind of looking at each other. I was sitting there talking to Drew. He kind of had that same look he did in the first quarter, but he had the look this time of keep giving me the ball, and we’ll be okay. We ended up winning by three touchdowns.”
Coach Roberts loves the dynamics of a running quarterback like Lowry.
Said Roberts:”It opens up your offense. There’s a lot more things you can do in the running game. In high school when you can run the football, you are liable to win a lot more than when you throw it. He’s what I call a glider. When he’s running, it looks effortless, so you kind of underestimate him. Then he gets around the corner, and he’s by you already.”
Lowry’s passing skills continue to improve, which shouldn’t be surprising.
He has a baseball scholarship to Belmont as a pitcher and shortstop.
Said Lowry:”Playing shortstop helped a lot because throwing on the run and just throwing the ball from different positions where you might be off-balance or throwing off your back foot.”
Lowry has helped the Eagles earn their first home playoff game in four years.
Roberts:”Right now we are putting the ball in his hands, and the offense will go where you take us.”
