Kemp-Abrams contest goes into Wednesday

ATLANTA (WDEF) – Georgia’s Governor Race couldn’t be much tighter.

Brian Kemp has narrowly edged out Stacey Adams in the unofficial results.

But the main question is did he get enough votes to avoid a runoff?

With almost 99% of the votes counted, the Republican holds onto a narrow 50.77 % lead over Abrams 48.29%

But he must finish over 50% to avoid the runoff.

Kemp told supporters just before 3 AM that he’s “confident victory is near.”

However, Democrat Abrams told her followers that she would not give up until the last vote is counted.

And her staffers are saying that tens of thousands of provisional ballots still must be counted later on Wednesday.

There were reports of voting problems in the Atlanta area today and some people were still voting this evening after 10 PM as a result.

Of course, Democrats have complained bitterly that Kemp kept his job as Secretary of State while running for Governor.

That means his office will handle the provision count and decisions on which ballots will be counted. Plus any recount. And the final certification.

President Carter called the situation similar to third world countries where he has monitored elections.

So don’t expect this race to wrap up on Wednesday.
