Locals petition to fix the “Death Curve” of Cagle Mountain

SEQUATCHIE COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — People are organizing to improve a deadly stretch of highway. There are a few curves on State Route 111, but one in particular, according to locals, is notorious for car wrecks.

Locals are calling it the “Death Curve” of Cagle Mountain. The curve is around mile marker 22, with huge rocks on one side and steep bluff on the other.

Rae-Anne Bradley works with the Tennessee Department of Transportation. She said, “we’re doing everything we can to alert drivers, make them aware of the conditions out there.”

Bradley continued, “drivers need to pay attention to these signs, and they need to take them seriously. We encourage everyone to practice safe driving habits at all times, whenever they’re on the road, no matter where they are, but especially at this location.”

Sequatchie County 14 year old Michael Chamberlain created the Facebook group named “Fix the Curve of Death.”

The group has over 100 members petitioning for change.

Some are calling for more signage, concrete barriers and increased policing in the area.

Brandon Blackwell was involved in a car accident on this curve on January 28.

He was hit head on and rolled down the mountain, suffering severe injuries.

He says concrete barriers would have prevented this accident.

Sequatchie County Sheriff Bill Phillips says he’s aware of the issue.

He plans to sit down with the Tennessee Highway Patrol and TDOT so that they can work together to find a real solution.
