Northwest Georgia man convicted of decade long molestation of family member
SUMMERVILLE, Georgia (WDEF) -A jury has convicted a northwest Georgia man of child molestation of a family member.
51 year old Eugene Hubbard of Lyerly was convicted of child molestation, sexual battery and incest.
Prosecutors say he committed the abuse over a ten year period.
Eventually, the girl told a school counselor who reported it.
Investigators found the entire family knew of the abuse, but never reported it.
When Chattooga County officers arrived to arrest him, Hubbard held a shotgun to his chest and threatened to kill himself.
After a 17 hour standoff, his finger finally slipped off the trigger and officers tazed him.
The jury returned a guilty verdict this week after a two day trial.
Hubbard was sentenced to life in prison, with at least 35 years to be served.
“This case represents the priority we place on protecting kids, even when others in their life do not” said District Attorney Chris Arnt.
“Thanks to the efforts of Investigator Burrage, Chief Assistant Baugh and ADA Smith this predator will spend at least the next three decades behind bars and our community can rest a little easier that this criminal is off the streets. We hope this verdict can bring some sense of justice to the victim in this case.”
