What’s Right With Our Schools: Battle Academy Bagel Toppings
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Battle Academy students are getting lessons in running a successful business. They’ve teamed up with Honey Seed to learn how to make bagels, how much to charge for bagels, and now they’re getting creative about what to put on a bagel. It’s a delicious example of what’s right with our schools.
Tarah Kemp is the Culinary Integration Specialist for Battle Academy.
She explains,” Here we are at Battle Academy, we are finally on our final day of the design process. So, we’ve already had him Mr. Robert come from Honey Seed to talk about the entrepreneurial business side of it, and we’ve also had Chef Eric come and work with the students as they are designing there a bagel flavor, and now this is the day where they get to create the cream cheese flavor that will accompany and complement the bagel flavor that they had previously made.”
Kemp continues, “Cooking Up Learning and the Chop Challenge with the Partnership of Honey Seed, is super important because of the fact that the kids get a chance to see a real-world problem, see a real-world life and business and truly apply it to on elementary scaled level. Today, as they are taking his final step in the design process, students are taking the extra layer creativity as they push forward thinking about the prior flavor of the items into their bagel designs, and it’s fully encompassing this creativity while we include garden ingredients. This is creating this farm to table mindset and truly fostering appreciation for the agricultural and entrepreneurial mindset. As the kids are starting to wonder what this will add to the cream cheese, we’re also taking that step further by only adding five ingredients into the cream cheese, flavor.”
She continues, “As the students are wondering how much of the particular ingredient they need we are still incorporating those math standards that are expected on a real-world scale. So, as students are wondering if they need a teaspoon what if I didn’t have the proper measuring tool in front of them, I would wonder how many of these teaspoons would they need.”
She concludes,” Kids are super excited as they are trying to aim for the top price. The top price, of course, is not only the bragging rights, but also have their bagel and cream cheese combination sold at Honey Seed for the entire week. This is going to showcase their pride, their creativity, and that teamwork that we try to harvest here at Battle Academy and also to really give them a chance to say wow we actually did this. ”
