New grants to improve rural internet systems in northwest Georgia

WASHINGTON D.C. (WDEF) – The Biden administration announced on Friday grants for improving High Speed Internet Networks in northwest Georgia.

The money goes to DoveTel Communications to expand middle mile high-speed internet infrastructure.

(Middle mile internet carries large amounts of data and helps connects rural areas to the Internet backbone).

They will build 185 miles worth of fiber route through eight Georgia counties, including Chattooga and Walker.

Those areas do not currently have commercial “dark fiber” offerings. Dark fiber networks have a higher capacity and better signal strength.
