Father’s Day celebrated by Chattanooga community
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June each year.
The holiday is observed in over 100 countries around the world.
“It’s very special because you get to celebrate your dad and what they do for you. And I think it’s a really good day to celebrate. Because they do a lot for your family and they also help you with a lot of stuff you need help with,” Chattanooga visitor Abigail Robinson said.
Father’s Day originated in the U.S. by Sonora Smart Dodd. As a daughter of a Civil War veteran, Dodd wanted to honor fathers across the world.
It was declared as a national holiday in 1972 by former president Nixon. The holiday honors father figures and their influence in society.
“I think for me, Father’s Day is giving that opportunity to celebrate and give thanks to the men that have always been … your provider, your protector, and you know, just saying thank you to them,” Local resident Carla McClatty said.
Celebrating over 100 years since it first originated, Father’s Day continues to be a popular holiday.
