Being considerate of veterans on the Fourth
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — As you’re shooting fireworks this Fourth of July, there’s one group to be sensitive of.
Veterans who have PTSD may have anxiety that gets triggered by fireworks.
This is due to the similarities in sound between firework pops and gunshots.
Doctors say that while you shouldn’t cancel your plans, you should be considerate of any veterans who may live nearby.
“Neighbors and friends can actually start the conversation with people if they’re going to have an event,” said clinical psychologist Dr. Erica Barnes. “Start opening up and asking people who are around, ‘How comfortable you with fireworks?'”
Experts advise veterans to plan ahead with breathing and grounding techniques.
They also advise having an exit strategy.
