Glow in the dark sharks hatching at the Tennessee Aquarium

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Shark week returns, and in celebration, the Tennessee Aquarium announced new shark species that are hatching.

These sharks ‘glow’ in the deep and can be seen with black light.

Senior Aquarists view the animals with yellow tinted glasses.

“With shark week, mostly the big scary sharks get all the press. But these little guys, they’re really amazing too. For things like this, that we don’t even know about until recently. They have biofluorescence, so basically, they reflect light in a very fluorescent manner,” Senior Aquarist Kyle McPheeters said.

The species are known as the Swell Shark and Chain Cat shark.

While the animals came from different coasts, they have the same glowing adaptation.

Hopefully the animals will be featured in an exhibit where people can see the biofluorescence firsthand.
