40 Local teachers receive $500 grants for school

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Starting off Wednesday morning, Hamilton County teachers met and resumed the first annual ‘Every Student Reads’ conference at UTC.

Teachers from the Hamilton County school district attended the conference to learn more about early childhood literacy.

The two-day event continued this morning with awarding 40 $500 teacher grants.

Today, the conference started off with teacher grant giveaways.

“It was really amazing. I know if any of these teachers are like myself, we pretty much provide everything in our classrooms out of our own pocket. This is just going to help us be able to calm down, relax, and really be able to build community in our classrooms because we have one less thing to stress about,” (Orchard Knob Elementary) Kindergarten teacher Kaiya Samuel said.

The initiative focused on the schools’ commitment to literacy as they approach the return to school.

They want families to know that literacy is a community effort, and it takes everyone getting involved.
