Cleveland Going Fast This Fall Under New Head Coach Chandler Tygard
Cleveland, TN-(WDEF-TV) You don’t have to go to Knoxville this football season to see an up-tempo offense.
New Cleveland coach Chandler Tygard is bringing the hurry up attack to the Blue Raiders.
News 12’s Brian Armstrong tries to keep up, as he shines the 30-in-30 spotlight on Cleveland.
Tygard: We’re doing two a days here for the first time, and I think since 2012. And then we’re changing offenses, changing defenses, and so we got a lot going on, a lot of change, a lot of new coaches. But so far they’ve embraced it. They’re having a great time.
Speed is everything at Cleveland High School under new head coach Chandler Tygard.
Tygard: We just go real fast, so we snap the ball every ten to 13 seconds is the goal, and we get as many plays in as we can. We average about 85 plays a game of offense this year.
Adams; We got hand signals, and it’s a very fast pace compared to last year. With so many plays happening in a game, this is the time of the year the coaching staff use to build up this fast level of play. And so we gotta get used to it right now while it’s hot and you got multiple practices. And then once you get to the late August, hopefully you’re rocking and rolling the way you should be,
Teams facing Cleveland will see everything from the offense, including multiple QB sets.
Adams: When he’s in at quarterback, I can go anywhere I want to on the field, and it just works out very perfectly. So last year, I played a little bit of tight end and a wide receiver. Last year as a quarterback, you want to know what your wide receivers are doing and how the releases and all that. So I know as a wide receiver standpoint that I know how I’m a release, how I’m going to do this, and me knowing how to do a wide receiver is easy on me.
Tygard: For quarterback, we can do a lot of things. I mean, we can play two quarterbacks at the same time. We can do a lot of different runs, a little packages. We try to use as many good players as we have.
If that’s 50 players, we’ll play them all. If that’s eleven, we’ll only play those eleven. So we’re fortunate at Cleveland where we got a lot of good players, and we snap the ball so fast. We want to spread the ball out as much as possible and use everybody on the team and keep it fun for everybody.
And Tygard has high praise for the defense.
Tygard: I’m just excited about the defense. This is probably the best defense that I’ve had since I’ve been a head coach, and we’re known for offense and scoring a lot of points, but I’ve just been really proud of the effort on the defensive side.
