Local volleyball teams play in support of ‘Remarkable Grace’
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The second annual Grace Mitchell Memorial Showcase was held today at Boyd Buchanan.
Teams from around the community paid to participate in the event to raise money for the Grace Eleanor Mitchell Scholarship Fund.
“My husband and I are just overwhelmed with the love and outpouring of support. And it’s just a testament to Grace’s life. And how remarkable we think that she is that so many love and have reached out to us,” Jennifer Mitchell said.
Since her passing in 2021, Grace has left a remarkable legacy for other athletes and students.
“We love this opportunity to be able to one, keep her memory alive, and just celebrate her life. We’re just so thankful for all of these other teams and communities that also see how important it is,” Boyd Buchanan head volleyball coach Shanda Kirk said.
Her campaign, “Be Remarkable” has inspired students around the area.
“She was just truly an outstanding person. Everybody that was around her knew that. She lit up the room when she walked into it. I feel like today we all can remember Grace and feel her presence in this playday today,” former teammate and assistant coach (Sequatchie) Chloe Griffith said.
Grace continued her legacy today with a play day for local teams to play and raise money for college education.
Over the last two graduating classes were given 42 scholarships averaging $32,000.
“Our goal as a family is to continue to bless our Sequatchie County High School community as well as our Boyd Buchanan community so that her love and just the grace of God continues so that young people can thrive even in our grief,” Mitchell said.
Teams from Sequatchie, Boyd, Whitwell, Marion, and Ooltewah came out today to play in support of Grace.
The Mitchell family hopes to continue to bless others through Grace’s legacy.
