Jay Person Ready to Become Face of Mocs Defense

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) In recent years, Chattanooga has enjoyed the luxury of defensive players worthy enough of being called the face of the defense. Davis Tull, Isaiah Mack, and Devonnsha Maxwell to name a few.
Now senior pass rusher Jay Person is ready to step into the spotlight.
The Bradley Central grad heads into the year with a number of pre-season accolades.

When Jay Person won the SoCon defensive player of the year award last season, it marked the 10th time Chattanooga got the honor. Starting to sound like a UTC tradition.
Said Person:”I know me and Ben and Quay. We joke about it all the time. They say they’re coming for it this year, so it’s a good deal. We’ve had it two years in-a-row here at UTC with D-Mac the first year and me this past year. It’s a good deal.”
For now, Person is dissing all the pre-season accolades.
Said Person:”Those awards. They’re fake awards honestly. It shows work you put in in the past, but it doesn’t mean nothing if you don’t go out and put the work in here in the fall.”
Said head coach Rusty Wright:”He just continues to work. I think that’s the biggest thing. You haven’t seen him take a step back in how he’s trying to prepare himself, and how he’s trying to do things.”
Now Person is the man…the face of the Mocs defense.
Said Person:”Oh yeah it just fuels me really. Try to go after it again.
Do what I did last year or last season. Just make my teammates better. Really fuel them to get to that point.”
Said Wright:”He has

taken the role more of being the guy always, which will help him in the long run as he continues to move forward. I think that’s the biggest thing. We haven’t seen him just relax. I think he has tried to push himself this off-season. He has gotten bigger. He is actually bigger than he ever has been at this point and time. He’s stronger, which will help him in the long run when we go through this deal.”
