Mocs Quarterback Battle Now a Two Man Race
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) And then there were two.
The battle to win the Mocs starting quarterback job this fall is now a two-man race.
News 12’s Brian Armstrong updates the chase.
Chattanooga Mocs have a quarterback battle going on between Chase Artopoeus and Luke Schomburg.
Said head coach Rusty Wright:”Good competition in there. I think those guys have been good. We’ve had some guys in and out in front of them, so it’s kind of hard to get a rhythm with some things. But I like what both of them are doing. I think both of them got an opportunity to be good players. So we’ll see how it goes here next and we’ll make a decision here next five, six days probably.”
Said Artopoeus:”It’s really amazing to be able to have the chance to lead this team and don’t take it for granted at all. Day in, day out, working my hardest, competing my hardest, watching film, doing all the things you have to do to be able to win that starting spot.”
The competition is allowing both to become the best versions of themselves.
Said Wright:”That’s really how you break the wall. You got to have people pushing you and you got to push other people. I think we have a really healthy QB room too.”
Said Artopoeus:”Well, I mean, I think that’s what you want as a competitor. You want somebody pushing you. You don’t want to just walk into something. If you got anything about you at all, you want to go compete for it and know you won it, did those things and give yourself an opportunity to give as good as you can be.”
Coach Wright says when picking a starter at the QB position, it usually is evident.
Said Wright:”I mean it shows up on film when you’re watching it, and pretty easy to make a decision most of the time. Every once in a while you get into some situations where it’s close and you got to decide, but most time on film it takes care of itself and you move on.”
Both players obviously want to get the starting job, but it’s a positive quarterback room despite the competition.
Said Artopoeus:”It’s not a jealousy contest or anything going on. It’s more of an inspiration style. So when they make a good play, I’m happy,
and when I make a good play, they’re happy. And I think that we’ve been definitely elevating each other since the beginning of camp.”
