Local lawmakers supported Kevin McCarthy in House Speaker vote
Marjorie Taylor Greene is now trying to draft Donald Trump to replace him
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WDEF) – Local Congress members were on the losing side of the House Speaker vote on Tuesday.
Representatives Fleischmann and DesJarlais in Tennessee, Marjorie Taylor Greene in Georgia, Chuck Edwards in North Carolina plus Robert Aderholdt and Dale Strong in Alabama all voted to retain Kevin McCarthy as Speaker.
But a coalition of eight conservative Republicans and Democrat lawmakers joined to force him out of the job.
Those eight, led by Matt Goetz of Florida, included Knoxville Republican Tim Burchett.
This is the first time in U.S. History that a sitting House Speaker has been removed from office.
McCarthy says he will not try to regain the position.
So now, Republicans are campaigning behind the scenes for the job.
Marjorie Taylor Greene is already floating the idea of drafting Donald Trump for Speaker. He is not a member of the House, but the Constitution does not require him to be.
But on Wednesday, the former president says he is focused on his own presidential election.
“The Republican party has some great people who would do a great job,” Trump said.
