UPDATE: GBI identifies man killed in Rossville officer involved shooting

UPDATE (Oct. 10):

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has released more information on the officer involved shooting in Rossville.

The GBI identified the man killed as 58-year-old Rossville-native, James Kenneth Cook. Cook had an outstanding felony warrant for sexual exploitation of a child, according to the GBI.

When deputies arrived at the home on Bragg Circle, the homeowner allowed them to enter. After announcing their presence, Cook locked himself in a bedroom. The GBI said deputies then forced the bedroom door open.

Then, Cook shot and injured a deputy. That deputy also returned fire, shooting Cook.

Authorities pronounced Cook dead at the scene. The GBI said their medical examiner’s office will be performing the autopsy.

The wounded deputy was taken to Erlanger Hospital in stable condition. Authorities say they expect him to make a full recovery.

The GBI said they will continue investigating and then hand the case over to the Walker County district attorney.

EARLIER (Oct. 9):

ROSSVILLE, Ga. (WDEF) – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will handle the case of a Walker County deputy who fatally shot a suspect Sunday evening.

Sheriff Steve Wilson says the encounter happened at 4 Bragg Circle in the Fairview community, near Rossville, around 6 p.m.

Sheriff’s deputies were told that a woman said her brother was threatening her and would not let her back in the residence.

The sheriff says deputies soon learned the man had active warrants in Whitfield County.

Based on that, they got permission from the homeowner to enter the residence.

The sheriff says the suspect locked himself inside a bedroom.

When deputies entered, he fired at them, and they returned fire.

The suspect was killed.

One of the deputies was also hit.

The sheriff says the officer will undergo surgery on Monday for non-life-threatening injuries.
