Wacker Produces Most Polysilicon in the World

Wacker adding new plant to Charleston site

CHARLESTON, Tenn. (WDEF) – A Bradley County plant wants you to know how instrumental they are in your holiday plans.

Wacker Chemical in Charleston is the world’s largest manufacturer of polysilicone.

That material is placed into virtually all electronic devices via semiconductor chips.

Wacker makes one out of every two semiconductor chips, which they say helps the modern world keep moving.

Jim Tharp, the Senior Director of Operations at Wacker Chemical said, “Without polysilicon, there would be no electronic devices. That means our automobiles would go back to the 1960s. There would be no cell phones, there would be no televisions. Our lives would be significantly different.”

They encourage any students who might be interested in helping create more of this product in the future to study fields such as mathematics and engineering.
