TVA hosts nuclear emergency preparation event at Sequoyah Nuclear Plant
SODDY DAISY, Tenn. (WDEF) – TVA wants to ensure people are safe in the event of a nuclear incident.
“World Nuclear Day is this coming Saturday. And so today, we discussed information calendars that have come out, to everyone that is within the emergency planning zone 10-mile radius,” said Paul Gain, Sequoyah Emergency Preparedness Manager.
Construction at Sequoyah began in 1969 and the plant began its first operation in 1981.
TVA says nuclear power is the largest producer of carbon free energy.
“By using nuclear power, we can effectively help the country as well as our environment,” said Gain. “Nuclear power is a good source of power for everyone.”
At Sequoyah Nuclear Plant, TVA says employees are properly trained in the case of an emergency.
Our employees get trained on simulators, as well as go over emergency operating procedures, in order to prevent issues from occurring,” Gain concluded.
TVA advises people to go indoors and close any source of outside air during a nuclear incident.
But if the incident is severe, they say leaving the area can save your life.
TVA Sequoyah Nuclear Plants provides the updated calendar on their website.
