Supermarket Guru Report for March 30th
Maury’s Hive Tea Whole Leaf Black Tea with Granulated Honey is a HIT.
It’s surprising that no one has thought of this before. Take tea, and add sugar and honey to it right in the bag. Brew 5 minutes, the sweeteners will dissolve. Look real close and you can see the honey and sugar in the bag. And you know when it’s ready because the tea bag then floats to the top. Clever. Each tea bag has 6 grams of sugar and is 28 calories. This is for those who like their tea sweet, of course. It’s convenient, but also a lot more expensive than sweetening it yourself. I would like to see the type of tea identified and it’s source, same goes for the honey. Retails for $9.99 for 3.8 oz 12 tea bags. Total Score is 85.
Chobani Greek Yogurt Limited Batch Grape is a HIT.
This is a real interesting idea. Similar to other food categories, Chobani has introduced "limited batch" yogurts to tickle our taste buds – and presumably to get new users to eat yogurt. This grape variety is a blended yogurt with grape puree and grape juice concentrate and does taste very grape-y. In fact, almost too much. The intense grape flavor is sweet and overshadows that great Greek yogurt flavor. One cup is just 2.5 grams of fat, 14 grams of sugars and 12 grams of protein. The probiotic cultures are listed by name. I’m thinking that this is a perfect yogurt for kids and adults who have a sweet tooth. Retails for $1.29 for 5.3 oz. Total Score is 90.
Good Food Made Simple Breakfast Bowl Egg Whites, Uncured Bacon & Turkey Sausage is a HIT.
March is Frozen Food Month, so we are celebrating, and rating all frozen foods this week! Cooking prepared foods that contain eggs in a microwave can be tricky. But this brand figured it out. The egg whites came out fluffy and flavorful. The pieces of bacon perfect. The peppers and onion add just the right flavor and mild kick. I would like to see a tiny bit more cheddar cheese. Make sure you stir thoroughly after the first two minutes – otherwise the turkey sausage overcooks a bit. This is just 270 delicious and filling calories with 15 grams of fat and 18 grams of protein. The sodium is a bit high at 650 mg – still lower than many other frozen breakfast foods, but would love to see it even lower. Now you have no excuse not to eat breakfast! Retails for $3.99 for 7oz. Total Score is 90.
Columbus Foods Pizza Naturale Uncured Piccante Salame & Sausage is My PICK OF THE WEEK.
Wow! This is one of – if not the best – frozen pizzas you can buy. The toppings are in the perfect proportion – and delicious. The cheese is a blend of Whole Milk Mozzarella, Unsmoked Provolone, Parmesan and Romano. And not too much to take over the whole pizza! The uncured piccante salami is the best I’ve ever tasted on a pizza and does not contain nitrates or nitrites or antibiotics. The sausage is pork sausage. The pizza cooked perfectly on the first try – just 18 minutes from frozen in the oven. The crisp crust is thin and tasty – it’s not there to just hold the ingredients. 1/4 of the pizza, about 4 1/2 ounces, is 340 calories, 19 grams of fat, 16 grams of protein and 900 mg of sodium. I would like to see that lowered a bit. This is one GREAT pizza. Retails for $9.99 for 18.25 oz. Total Score is 92.
