ELVIS Act to protect musicians from AI if passed

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WDEF) – The connection between artificial intelligence and music may soon be regulated in Tennessee.

The Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security, or ELVIS ACT, has been introduced at this session of the Tennessee General Assembly.

The act would allow music artists to protect their name, image, and likeness from being taken by AI tools without permission.

This would upgrade current laws that Tennessee has against an individual’s likeness taken without their consent.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee told an audience comprised of those in the music industry, “Technology changes, and new protections are necessary, and artificial intelligence, as helpful and beneficial as it can be when it’s used appropriately, is something that can frankly rob and destroy an artist’s career.”

A group of Congressional lawmakers introduced a similar bill that would grant federal protection today called the No AI Fraud Act.
