CPD: Man who died in SWAT call was wanted for murder
UPDATE:
The Chattanooga Police Department provided updates Thursday afternoon on a man who killed himself during a SWAT call.
Their fugitive unit and the U.S. Marshal Service had an arrest warrant for Dewayne Campbell, 36, for first-degree murder.
They attempted to serve that warrant Wednesday evening, January 10, just after 5 p.m. This was at Campbell’s home on the 2100 block of Appling Street.
CPD said Campbell refused to surrender to officers.
Law enforcement then surrounded the home. They added that Campbell tried to flee through the back door, but he immediately went back into the house.
Officers said they heard a gunshot at this time.
Once CPD’s SWAT and HNT teams arrived, they entered the house to find Campbell dead. Authorities said the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
The police department said they are working with the Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s Office in the death investigation.
EARLIER:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – On Wednesday, around 5:15 p.m., Chattanooga Police Department’s Fugitive Unit attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a resident on the 2100 block of Appling Street.
The fugitive was seen at the resident and refused to surrender to officers.
The fugitive failed to follow commands to exit the residence, the CPD SWAT and HNT teams were called to the scene. Officers stayed outside until the SWAT and HNT arrived.
Officers heard a gunshot inside the residence. Chattanooga CPD says when SWAT checked the residence, they found the fugitive dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police are continuing to investigate, and the preliminary information is subject to change.
