Second Rabies Case Confirmed in Ellijay area

Ellijay, Georgia (WDEF) Northwest Georgia health officials confirm a second case of rabies in the mountains.

A resident on Old Highway 76 in Morganton reported that a raccoon attacked his dog in a pen last weekend.

He shot it and took it to the animal hospital for testing.

The rabies diagnosis was confirmed yesterday.

The dog was scratched on the nose, and was not current on the rabies vaccination, so it had to be destroyed as well.

No humans were exposed.

Fannin County Environmental Health officials will be canvassing the immediate area of the incident on Wednesday with alert notification flyers.

Officials continue to urge residents to maintain rabies vaccinations in their pets to guard against the deadly disease.
