East Lake Community Walk
The Chattanooga Police department encouraged unity in the East Lake Community Monday as part of their monthly walks to bring citizens, police, and city leaders together.
Walking a few blocks around the neighborhood showed the presence of residents who care.
East Lake has seen some improvement in the past year…like a brand new playground at their Youth and Family Development Center.
"The one before was just orange and not much, but the one now have color I’m gonna say everything," said 8-year-old Avion Williams.
Khaliah Mclemore, a mother of three, says the violence still prevails in their part of town.
"We hear gunshots sometimes. The fighting doesn’t come this far but we see the people passing through the neighborhood," Mclemore said.
But when a community takes the first steps, in the rain or shine, a better future could be in store somewhere down the road.
"What I think it shows is that people are excited about being part of making their neighborhood safer, working with police officers, and other community members to keep a watch out," said Mayor Andy Berke.
