Cleveland, TN-(WDEF-TV) Coaching is certainly an emotional profession.
Now imagine coaching alongside your spouse.
That’s the case at Cleveland.
Girls head basketball coach Bianca Henlsey coaches the Lady Raiders along side her husband Martin.
News12’s Brian Armstrong details the family affair.

How does coaching with your spouse work?

Bianca:(chuckles)

Cleveland girls basketball is led by head coach Bianca Hensley and she and her husband Martin Hensley had a great way to test a marriage. Start coaching together.

Martin:”It’s actually a lot easier than anticipated when we first started.”

Bianca:”I switched to Stewart’s Creek High School and obviously got a brand new coaching staff and wanted him to help.”

Martin:”We were about to get married and she was already a coach. So I was like Well, I’m moving to you. So I need a job. I started coaching with the boy side of her school. She was at and it was a good time for us to connect and coach together. And this is year six for us now.”

Some people of Martin’s family questioned the decision to join the coaching staff of his wife.

Martin:”We were only a couple years in the marriage when it started. So, uh, I got some warnings from family and friends and stuff like, do you think it’s strong enough yet?”

Bianca:”We try to do a really good job of separating, you know, work from just home life. Um, but, you know, obviously there’s going to be disagreements, just like anything.”

They both say working with their spouse gives them a coaching advantage.

Bianca:”In the coaching world, you know, loyalty and trust, it’s always big. And so, obviously with my spouse, you know, 100%. ”

Martin:”We’re able to talk about all that. of not only the basketball side, but our girls that we care about, uh, being a husband, a wife, they can see we love each other and you know, they’re young women. So, uh, they’re preparing for life. We’re doing more than basketball with them and hopefully they see her as a role model.”

And because they are in the same coaching staff, they get to see each other.

Bianca:”It’s actually really nice to be on the same schedule. You know, we’ve been doing this now for, I think, six years and so we have the same schedule.

We have the same breaks. Um, we come home with basketball. I feel like we talk about it all the time.”
