Union claims they are nearing a majority of workers requesting representation at Volkswagen Chattanooga
DETROIT, Mich. (WDEF) – The United Auto Workers say they are “nearing a majority” of workers requesting to join the union at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga.
It’s part of an unprecedented nationwide drive to organize workers at non-union plants all at once.
The union claims that more than 10,000 workers across the county have no signed union cards with them at 13 of the plants.
“Our ‘Stand Up’ movement has caught fire among America’s autoworkers, far beyond the Big Three,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. “These workers are standing up for themselves, for their families and for their communities, and our union will have their back every step of the way.”
The union drives in Chattanooga and at a Mercedes plant in Alabama seem to be the most advanced.
Getting a majority of workers to sign at the Chattanooga plant would lead to a formal vote to adopt union representation.
Chattanooga VW workers have rejected the union in two previous votes.
