‘Moms Demand Action’ against gun violence
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – At the Avondale community center, the organization ‘Moms Demand Action’ came together to support those who have lost loved ones due to gun violence. They also preached the importance of gun safety along with changes that need to be made.
“Parents that are going through gun violence is a trauma that you carry every day. Your brain is no longer the same and still carries that trauma,” said Moms Demand Action Leader, Christy Rashed.
Moms Demand Action hits close to home for Rashed as it is the 30th anniversary of her son Jamal who was tragically killed due to gun violence. Rashed knew that she needed to honor her son by carrying on his legacy.
“In memory of our son, Jamal, we set up a scholarship, because Jamal was about education. He was a scholar, so I would not let his voice die because of someone else’s senseless use of a gun,” said Rashed.
Rashed demands that something must change as gun violence in young adults and kids is happening way too frequently.
Representative, Jusuf Hakeem, made an appearance as well to show his support for standing up to gun violence.
“I’m praying for other people that are going through this, that our community can come together let’s end this senseless gun violence. We need to get out more this year to vote then we ever have,” said Rashed.
Moms Demand Action is hoping to make an impact on the decisions that are made in the upcoming election and will hold other meetings as well. For more information, visit the Moms Demand Action website.
