What’s Right With Our Schools: Dade County High School Spirit
TRENTON, Ga. (WDEF) – Imagine what a go-pro camera could pick up in the student section during a high school football game. Our friends at Dade County High did just that and won a statewide award for it! What the camera captured is a spirited example of what’s right with our schools.
Josh Hurst is the Audio Video Technology and Film Teacher at Dade County High School.
He says, “GHSA, the Georgia High School association, has a student athletic council, and basically, it’s just to give high school students that are also leaders in their community an opportunity to make some choices at the GHSA state level. They have started sponsoring a spirit section contest. And so. So, basically, they just ask you to make a short video highlighting your student section. And so this year, we decided to participate in it.”
Hurst continues, “We had a couple of weeks to put it together and get clips, and we film all of our home football games and away games. So, we had a ton of footage to use for pep rallies and things like that. And then some of the cameras that I use for my level one classes are GoPros. And somebody was like, coach erst, why don’t we just pass out the GoPro cameras to the student section and see what kind of footage we get?”
Lilian Baker is a junior at Dade County.
She says, “He made the mistake of telling me that they were waterproof, and so we got water guns either that week or the week later, and we were shooting those GoPros up and down. And the GoPros, they really do bring in a lot of good footage, and it’s like close footage where you feel like you’re a part of the group.”
Mr. Hurst says, “Some of the shots were absolutely amazing, like, just kids being goofy in the stands, going crazy during plays, throwing powder, throwing streamers, shooting off water guns at each other. So we just decided, okay, well, let’s just keep doing this.”
Halen Chaney is a junior at Dade County High.
Halen says, “Just working on it the whole time. It was weird because it took forever, it seems like. And every day we would get, like 10 seconds done, maybe, and it was a minute 30 long, and it didn’t seem like it was going to come together. And eventually just getting it all done, it finally came together because we have people that do the hype videos every week and stuff, and we’re not those people. We do other stuff for the class. So, this was our first hype video, and we won.”
Lilian Baker remembers, “It was insane, but it came out really good. I love it. Hearst loves it. It. I think it’s an amazing video.”
Mr. Hurst concludes,” We didn’t just place. We won. So, Dade County High school, according to the GHSA, has the best student section in Single A through Five A divisions.”
