Bledsoe County parents upset with director of schools

BLEDSOE COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — Parents in Bledsoe County are complaining that the school board is considering a four-year extension on the contract for their director of schools.

The board discussed the contract extension at their meeting Monday night.

That included residents who voiced their concerns about giving Selina Sparkman a new contract when her current one still has more than a year left on it.

The proposed extension includes a hefty raise.

“I’m not saying to renew the contract, I’m not saying to not renew the contract. But you have 18 months to think about that,” one of the parents said. “And like several people have said, I feel that you guys should take into consideration, and talk to your teachers and talk to your staff.”

“If she’s willing to sign up now for four more years, I don’t think we should take a chance on who the director might be next year,” said school board member Andy Billingsley.

The board has not approved the contract yet.

If they do, it will go into effect this summer.
