Murray County prescribed burns, ‘no burn’ alerts for other counties

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — Local agencies have implemented a “no burn” alert for Tuesday due to weather conditions. On the other hand, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) announced it will soon be conducting prescribed burns in Murray County.

The Hamilton County Office of Emergency Management issued a “no burn” warning on Tuesday due to low humidity and wind.

Chattooga County EMA issued the same warning as well.

Polk County 911 said it would not be issuing burn permits Tuesday due to high winds.

The USFS said it is implementing several prescribed burns to “improve wildlife habitat, restore forest health, and safely reduce hazardous fuels.”

On Monday, April 15, the USFS began a prescribed burn at Rocky Flats in Murray County. They closed Mill Creek, Rocky Flats Road and the Rocky Flats OHV Trail System for the 1,172-acre burn.

On Tuesday, April 16, they began a prescribed burn at Bob Jones in Murray County. They will burn 1,191 acres and close East Cowpen, Pleasant Gap Road, Wiggins Road, Sumac Creek Trail and the Pleasant Gap parking area.

Then on Wednesday, April 17, they will conduct a 453-acre prescribed burn at Turkeybeard in Murray County. For this, the USFS will close FS1, Iron Mountain Trail and the Conasauga River Trail.
