Chattanooga police arrest break-in suspect who had a stolen gun

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Chattanooga police officers arrested a break-in suspect, who was also in possession of a stolen firearm.

According to the Chattanooga Police Department, two officers were patrolling Tacoa Avenue on Monday when they saw a suspect attempting to open a house’s window. They said the suspect had a red hoodie and red mask on.

It was around 6 p.m. when the incident happened, and the suspect started running when he saw the CPD vehicle.

The officers pursued the suspect on foot until the suspect stopped and threw his gun over a fence into a neighboring backyard.

CPD identified the suspect as 19-year-old Malik Hughes.

According to police, Hughes had a criminal history that prohibited him from legally owning a weapon.

The officers recovered the gun, which landed near a child’s playset.

CPD charged Hughes with evading arrest, theft of property, possessing a firearm with intent to go armed and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The police department said the investigation is ongoing.
