Male Hippo Actually A Female

This hippo needs a gender reveal party! 12-year-old hippo Gen-chan was thought to be a male, but a recent DNA test revealed that she’s actually female. When Osaka zookeepers received Gen-chan in 2017, customs documents said she was a boy. However, over the years, animal carers noticed that Gen-chan did not mark territory, attract females, or have visible male organs.

“We recognise the importance of confirming the sex, and we want to ensure that such mistakes will not happen again,” zoo director Kiyoshi Yasufuku said. Gen-chan will not be receiving a name change. (BBC)
