Mocs Golfers Can Endure Marathon Rounds During College Tournaments

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) The Mocs golf team tees off in the NCAA Regionals next Monday.
Hopefully Chattanooga won’t need too much patience on the course in the regionals.
College golf rounds can be notoriously long.
Guys walking and carrying their own bags and sometimes competing for 36 holes in one day.
Talk about a mental grind.

College golf is certainly fun, but your passion for the game can be tested with marathon rounds.
Said Mocs golfer John Houk:”Can’t count how many times got ot the course, and it has been pitch black dark in the morning. Then pitch black dark when we’ve left.”
Said Mocs head coach Blaine Woodruff:”I think we may have had like a 30-minute frost delay, so that kind of pushed us back a little bit. But we literally played the last hole in the dark. Guys were using cell phone lights on the greens to try and see which way the putt was breaking.”
If you thought there was a bottle neck at the intersection of I-75 and 24 in Chattanooga.
It’s nothing compared to the bottle neck and wait times on some par three holes in a college golf tournament.
Said Mocs golfer Braedon Wear:”I think I walked off the green, and there were four or five groups in front of me just sitting there. We sat there for 50 minutes to an hour before I got to hit. So that was a little bit absurd.”
So what do you do with all that down time between shots?
Said Houk:”I like making a little small talk. Getting to know my playing competitors. It’s just too much time to be focusing on my game.”
Said Wear:”I don’t love thinking about golf until it’s my turn to hit. So it kind of just gives me an opportunity to think about anything else in the world.”
Reporter:”Girls?”
Said Wear:”(chuckles) No. I can’t answer that one. My girlfriend will get mad at me for that one.”
Good answer Braedon.
You have to find a way to mentally grind it out if you want to compete at the top level of college golf.
Said Woodruff:”Some guys sing songs to themselves. Some guys look at nature. Getting creative. Try to figure out how to turn your brain off because if it’s on for that long. It doesn’t matter how mentally strong you are, it’s going to get worn out.”
