College Students’ Trip Trashes Park
3,000 college students visiting Shasta Lake in California left behind bottles, cans, plastic, pool floats, and more over Memorial Day weekend. The garbage took crews six hours to clean, and trash even ended up in the lake, Debbie Carlisi of the US Forest Service said. “That’s going to cause a problem with our fish and wildlife, and it decreases the recreation experience for our next visitors,” she said. UC Davis said that even though the event was not school-sanctioned, the university is “exploring ways of working with students to help restore the site or otherwise address the situation.” The University of Oregon said: “The garbage left behind does not represent the values of our institution.” (newser)
