McDonald’s Loses Big Mac Trademark In EU
McDonald’s no longer has the exclusive right to the “Big Mac” label in the European Union. Specifically, this ruling applies to its chicken products. The food chain Supermac brought the claim to court, and will now be allowed to use the term, along with other chains. Supermac sells beef, chicken burgers, and chicken nuggets across Ireland. The dispute began in 2017, when McDonald’s blocked Pat McDonagh from registering “Supermac” as a trademark. “We knew when we took on this battle that it was a David versus Goliath scenario,” McDonagh said. “We wholeheartedly welcome this judgement as a vindication of small businesses.” (BBC)
