Woman Finds Real Mayan Artifact At Thrift Store
Five years ago, Anna Lee Dozier bought a vase at a Maryland thrift store for $3.99. “It looked old-ish, but I thought maybe 20, 30 years old and some kind of tourist reproduction thing,” Dozier said. However, during a trip to Mexico, Dozier noticed that her vase looked like Mayan artifacts she saw in a museum. After returning home, she sent photos to authorities, who confirmed that her find was actually a priceless Mayan ceremonial urn. Dozier then wanted the piece out of her home as she has young boys. “I … was petrified that after 2,000 years, I would be the one to wreck it,” Dozier said. The piece will be sent to a Mexican museum. “She recognized that a whole country, a whole culture cares about it, and we are deeply in gratitude (to) her,” Mexican Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma Barragan said.
