Calhoun Anxious For Return to State Playoffs

Calhoun, GA-(WDEF-TV) Every year we find the Calhoun Yellow Jackets in the state playoffs.
Except for last year.
You can bet the tradition-rich program is motivated for a post-season return.
Brian Armstrong gives Calhoun the 30-in-30 spotlight.

Calhoun football has an expectation of competing for state titles, but last year the team went 6-4 and lost their two final games to miss the playoffs.
Said head coach Clay Stephenson:”The way this team has been resilient. Getting over last year and getting to this year and not looking back but looking forward.”
Said receiver Makadan Griffin:”Keep our head down. Play Calhoun football. Play fast. Play hard. Just focus on the little things.”
Said Stephenson:”These next two weeks are really key in kind of building that team chemistry and getting ready for the season.”
Calhoun had a heavy senior class last year, but the offensive line does have some players with experience.
Stephenson:”Any great football team has to start with the offensive line. Our two returning starters that are seniors that have really stepped up into a leadership role. It’s a little bit out of their comfort zone.”
They’ll be blocking for a new quarterback this year.
Said Griffin:”We’re pretty close. It’s easy to have that connection.”
Said Stephenson:”We’ve got two young guys that are battling out ever day. It has been enjoyable to watch.”
Calhoun high school was also re-classified from 5A ot 3A, and coach is channeling his inner Nick Saban when asked about it.
Said Stephenson:”That’s rat poison because it takes what it takes. It doesn’t matter if you are 3A or 5A or 7A, it takes the same work. Same work out here and in the weight room.
And the re-classification does give Calhoun a chance to renew some old Georgia rivalries.
Said Stephenson:”Adairsville and NW Whitfield. That’s kind of what I’m looking forward to.”
