Mocs Coach Rusty Wright Happy to See the Triple Option Leave the SoCon

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) The Chattanooga Mocs entertain Wofford Saturday.
It’s a white-out game with fans encouraged to wear white.
For the Mocs, they’re just glad they don’t have to deal with the triple option from the Terriers.
Wofford, the Citadel, and even Georgia Southern back in the day, were among the SoCon teams that ran the dreaded triple-option.

Life in the SoCon is never easier.
But it has to be a little easier for Mocs coach Rusty Wright now that the triple option is gone.
Reporter:”How nice is it in this league. I don’t think you face a true, triple option team anymore?”
Wright:(knocking on podium)”Knock on wood.”
Knock on wood if you’re with me.
Said Wright:”I’m thankful I can promise you that.”
Who can forget Georgia Southern in 2011, running for over 300 yards against Alabama with the triple option. Tide coach Nick Saban didn’t forget. Led to a classic Saban rant a few years later.
Said Saban in 2015:”Y’all don’t remember the Georgia Southern game do you? I don’t think we had a guy on that field that didn’t play in the NFL and about four or five of them were first round draft picks. I think that team won a national championship, but I’m not sure. They ran through us. We could not stop them. We could not stop them.”
Coach Wright can feel Nick Saban’s pain.
Said Wright:”I don’t miss it at all. I really don’t. Those are some long Saturdays even though they are shorter games, they are long Saturdays.”
Yeah like the triple option the Citadel used to run.
When they start converting third downs.
They bleed the clock, limiting your possessions on offense.
Said Wright:”Over here a couple of years ago when we beat them. Maybe my first year in 2019. We only had the ball for like 19 minutes.”
When the NCAA a couple of years ago banned cut blocks outside the tackle box..it makes running the triple option harder.
Daid Wright:”Once you get outside the perimeter, you can’t do it anymore. That has kind of changed what those guys can do schematically. If everybody in the secondary is standing on their feet, it makes it a whole lot better. That’s the thing they always say. Cut the three, and fun for free. I’ve seen it a bunch. I’m thankful I don’t play Army, Navy, or Air Force. I’m good.”
