Chattanooga Zoo launches naming contest for baby pied tamarins
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Chattanooga Zoo is celebrating the birth of two pied tamarins and launching a name contest.
Daphne, a pied tamarin, gave birth to two babies on September 19, 2024.
She previously had two males, Crash and Eddy, in 2021.
The new babies can often be seen riding on Daphne, their father Dudley, or their now brothers Crash and Eddy.
The zoo is asking the public to vote on names, with three pairs to choose from:
- Appa & Momo
- Apple & Cherry
- Merry & Pippin
Voting is available online and at the tamarin enclosure, with results to be announced on November 12, 2024.
Pied tamarins, critically endangered and native to a small part of Brazil’s rainforest, weigh about a pound and can grow up to one foot long.
Habitat destruction around the city of Manaus threatens their survival, and the zoo warns they could face extinction in a few decades.
