Chattanooga Zoo Family Welcomes Boysenberry the Sloth

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – As the new year is already off to a fast start, a very slow animal is joining the Chattanooga Zoo family.

Starting this week, visitors to the zoo will have the chance to meet a brand-new resident—a sloth, one of the most beloved and laid-back animals in the animal kingdom.

Boysenberry, the seven-year-old, two-toed sloth, is previously from the Oregon Zoo and is fulfilling the Chattanooga Zoo’s objective to bring a new sloth to the family after their previous sloth passed a few years back.

Sloths are native to Central and South America, and their slow lifestyle is due to their low-energy diet and unique metabolism. They are even known to sleep for 15 or more hours a day!

Boysenberry traveled in style, by private jet, while making her way to her new home. After being transported to her new enclosure, she immediately explored her new space while climbing from tree to tree before settling in the treetops.

Boysenberry is expected to be a star attraction, offering a perfect opportunity for some unique photo ops and learning experiences. She will also be part of the zoo’s ongoing education programs, aimed at teaching children and adults about wildlife conservation.

If you want to see Ms. Boysenberry, be sure to stop by and see the Zoo’s adorable new resident or check out the zoo’s livefeed of her.
