Update provided on proposed North River Elementary School

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- There was an update provided on the future of a new Hixson elementary school.
The proposed North River Elementary School would replace DuPont, Rivermont, and Alpine Crest Elementary Schools on the DuPont site.

Wednesday, the Commission learned the architecture firm Franklin Associates has been selected to design the new school.

Hamilton County Mayor Wamp says that the school’s proposed size currently ranges from 800-1,000 students, which could lead to a cost for $50 million dollars at the high end, with lower costs for a smaller school.

However, there is still concern from parents who don’t want the smaller elementary schools to close.

Commissioner David Sharpe referenced this by saying, “The people that I represent, that would be sending their kids to this school do not support this project. Ultimately I do not think I would be able to support this project.”

Mayor Wamp said in response, “I recognize and respect parents who oppose the disruption, I understand that. I want to deliver something to them that surprises them in a positive way.”

He  also said there could be an opportunity to integrate the new school with the North River YMCA next door, as the Y is planning to renovate that property in the coming years.
